The Highlight Incorrect Words question is one of eight question types present in the  This question tests your ability to listen for and point out the differences between a recording and a transcription. Highlight Incorrect Words Format


In this question candidates will be required to point out alterations made to certain parts of a short transcript. The transcript will be present below an audio box. The recording plays after 10 seconds and lasts for around 15 to 50 seconds. The recording will only be played once, so make sure that you listen attentively. There are no options to pause or rewind the audio. The recording is simply and audio version of the displayed transcript. You will have to highlight the incorrect words as you hear them, using your mouse cursor.

There are two to three of these questions in the listening part of PTE Academic, depending on the combination of items in a given test. They are presented together in a single block.


How Will This Question Be Displayed?


You will find the instructions at the top of the screen. Below that will be an audio status box, that will display the amount of time left for the audio to play, as well as the audio is playing or whether it has been completed.

The status box will count down from 10 seconds. Then a recording will play automatically and the status box will change to "Playing."

The audio status box also contains a blue bar that will gradually move to the right as the recording continues.

There will also be a slider, which you can use to adjust the volume to your own level of preference. You can adjust the slider by moving it to the left to decrease and right to increase. You are allowed to adjust the volume at any time while the recording is playing.

There will also be a transcription of the recording with up to seven errors. To respond, click on the words in the transcription that differ from what you hear on the recording. Each word you select will be highlighted in yellow. To deselect a word, click on the word again.

Once you are satisfied with your answers, you can select the ‘next’ button to move onto the next question. Remember that listening tasks are not individually timed, so the timer will continue to countdown on the screen.

How Is This Question Scored?


Every word you select is scored as either correct or incorrect. If all the selected words are correct, you receive the maximum score points for this item type. If one or more selected words are incorrect, partial credit scoring applies

For this question type, if all blanks are filled with the right word spelled correctly, you receive the maximum score points for this item type. If one or more blanks are filled incorrectly, partial credit scoring applies.

This question type also includes negative marking, and one point will be deducted for incorrect answers. Make sure you are confident in your choices.

Strategies For Answering This Question


This task can be challenging because you have to listen, read and click on the incorrect word at the same time. It can often be overwhelming for second language learners, since the recording is in English and contains unfamiliar accents as well.

You should start off by skimming the text quickly, as this will give you an idea about what you will hear in the recording. Be ready to select as you listen. To be in the best position to answer quickly you should place your mouse cursor at the beginning of the text,

Read the transcript as you listen to the audio.

Focus on identifying words in the transcription and move the cursor along the text as you hear the words. Be prepared to click on any word which does not match what is said. Keep moving the cursor along as you listen. Remember there are no options to pause the recording or listen to it again. If you do make a mistake make a mental note of it and keep moving. Do not recheck your responses right after you type them and while the recording is still playing, as you will waste valuable time and might end up missing important information. Instead wait until the recording is over to go back to that word and click it again to deselect it, and make it neutral.

Remember that this question has negative marking so do not make any random guesses. Select words that you sure  is different from the word in the recording.

Check your responses and correct them if necessary. 


Tips For The Highlight Incorrect Words In PTE Listening


When practicing for the PTE Listening section, make sure that you are familiar with different types of accents A great way to aid in your preparation is to familiarize yourself with how native English speakers speak. There are many ways in which you can do this. You could watch English TV programmes or News channels, listen to podcasts about topics that interest you or find content that is somehow IELTS related. This will also help acclimatize you to the sounds and unique pronunciations used by speakers with different accents.

We all are aware that PTE test centers have a very noisy ambiance due to the nature of questions asked in it. So it will only make sense to practice in a similar kind of environment.

Highlight an incorrect word only when you are very sure about it or else skip that.

Do not make any hasty changes to your choice of highlighted words after the audio has ended. Change them only when you are very sure about your mistake.

The PTE Listening task is one of those tasks where taking notes will not help so avoid dividing your focus in taking any kind of notes. What you must do instead is listening to the audio attentively and focus on moving the cursor on the transcript simultaneously.

You have to stay focused while appearing the highlight incorrect words, as listening and reading simultaneously you can lose your track, you will end up wasting a lot of time and effort which will affect your overall scoring and listening score as well.

As there is negative marking, you should try to avoid the word which you are not a hundred percent sure, or else it will adversely affect your overall score.
